‘Expectation,’ like ‘hope’ kills. It’s the curse of the sports fan in the main whose heart desires one thing yet the team or individual fails to deliver. In sailing we’ve all been there. The halcyon days where everything clicks and you’re untouchable are fleeting and memorable due to the simple fact of their scarcity.

I can remember races 40 years ago, clear as a bell, in tiny dinghies where I was Iron Mike Tyson in his prime and unbeatable. It didn’t last, but occasionally, very occasionally, you live up to your own expectations and hope, and everything comes together. You hit the line on the ‘B’ of the ‘Bang,’ hold the lane, build into the lead, round the top mark in first and from there on it’s all peaches and cream. That’s why we do it, right?
