I was reminded this morning by a dear friend in the ‘land of the long white cloud’ that every America’s Cup challenge is one crane-disaster away from defeat. It so nearly happened to the Kiwis in Barcelona where a power cut triggered a series of events that saw the boat fall a good few metres off the crane as the reel discharged, and very nearly scuppered everything. That night I walked past Ray Davies, coach to the stars, and asked if all was okay? “Yeah it’ll buff out” was the laconic response and just a few days later after mammoth heroics by Geoff Senior and the boys, Taihoro was back out at full lick like a new boat. Impressive stuff.
