There was an interesting moment at the SailGP New York regatta with the, Lord help me, ‘Chief Hype Officer’ DJ Khaled desperately trying to whoop up the sodden, rain-lashed crowd, by asking them on the count of three to shout for the team they were supporting. With it being New York, of course the overwhelming cry was for “USA. USA. USA.” and in that, there’s hope. The American audience is absolutely critical for SailGP to succeed and to grow, and with such enthusiasm proffered by the assembled throng, Russell Coutts would have been delighted but he knows for sure that a winning yankee team is the next step to cracking the USA. Sadly, the current team isn’t it, and although it’s commercially sound, ultimately it comes down to performances and in the New York drizzle, they were as wet as a damp weekend in Cleethorpes.
