The people that win you the America’s Cup are very often not the people that you know. The media builds up the big dogs, but it’s the shore team, the engineers, the data scientists and the guy or gal working deep in the design teams who has the eureka moment and is then encouraged by a flat structure to bring it forward. We all know who does that best, bless them, but there’s also highly talented sailors onboard with their heads-down that are doing the business, and in the main remain out of the spotlight. Perhaps Blair Tuke was the one that crossed the rubicon into public consciousness but in the Cup world, the trimmers and flight controllers are prized assets. Looking at how the teams have hired is very interesting in this cycle.
