Ahead of the 1987 America’s Cup, Dennis Conner chose Hawaii as the Stars ‘n’ Stripes training base. In his book ‘Comeback’ he wrote arguably one of the most famous lines, and one that I read and re-read so much that it’s implanted in my brain: “The three major factors to consider in a successful crewman are attitude, attitude, attitude. What we required of everyone was a total commitment to the commitment. Now there were some guys who joked that they should be committed for their commitment to the commitment, but by and large everyone who made the team did so because they were prepared to dedicate themselves 100 percent to their job. I made it clear to everyone from the beginning that no-one would make the team unless he or she put winning the Cup ahead of everything else in their lives: families, social lives, money, sex, religion, friendships. It had to be to give all or nothing at all.”
