So intrinsically linked to the Ferrari Hypersail project was Giovanni Soldini, that his exit seemed about as plausible as my story of the tiller of America showing up in Gravesend. You have to check and re-check the news at the beginning of April every year such is its unreliability amongst the keyboard-tapping class, but Soldini has gone and with his exit, the project loses a certain ‘something’ that will be hard to replace.

Giovanni is the Keith Richards x Jonny Depp of yachting. The guy you look at with that devil-may-care swagger, the lived-in face that has been crossing the Atlantic since the age of 16 and the ubiquitous respect from every sailor on the planet after that bold rescue of Isabelle Autissier in the ‘98 Around Alone. That earned him the Légion d’honneur, personally approved by then President Jacques Chirac and presented by none other than the legendary Gérard d’Aboville.
