A favourite read and re-read of mine is John Bertrand’s seminal book ‘Born to Win’ where there’s a paragraph that gets me every time: “Twelve good men and true, the men from the land Down Under, bound for Newport. Man for man, we would not ultimately measure up to the crew of Liberty in pure credentials. They had about six world champions on their boat, while we were essentially a bunch of Aussies trying to give it a go, mate. I thought we had a very close feeling right from the start. The only trouble was that on the day we left for the United States, I felt that only four of them believed deep in their souls that we could and would beat the Americans.”
