No one saw this coming. Few would have dared to predict it, but Paul Cayard had a stratospheric day for the memory books on Thursday at the Star Class World Championships in Croatia. It wasn’t just good, it was sublime. Two bullets from the 100+ fleet by eye-watering deltas suggest that not only did he and crewman Frithjof Kleen find a very different gear, they re-defined Star sailing at the elite level.

It was almost demonstration sailing, the likes of which we rarely see at the grand prix one design level. Cayard was on fire from the get-go and sits within striking distance of the World Championship crown, and another gold star for his mainsail, with two races left to sail.
