“We love them because they are sublimely beautiful, utterly impractical and fiendishly demanding,” so said Elizabeth Meyer, former owner of Shamrock V, about the J Class that are very much yachts of fantasy, almost the way of keeping the score in wealth. They always were, but today’s examples, beautifully restored and lavishly maintained as they all are, are true wonders of our sport that transport you back to a more innocent time, pre the Second World War, and the gilded age where unimaginable money met design and innovation. To own a J today is to say that not only have you made it, and made it big, but you know class and exude it.
