The Royal Maas Yacht Club in Rotterdam had a moment this weekend...
The birth of the Royal Maas Yacht Club in Rotterdam was predicated by the efforts of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Yachtclub, that had been founded in 1846 and catered for a desire to row competitively on the Nieuwe Maas river. What the KNYC started, the Royal Maas YC simply did better, and on February 17 1851 was formed. They’ve never looked back since. The club immediately cultivated the activity of rowing races using traditional vessels such as the vierriemsgiek, a four-oared gig, with early successes including a victory by its flagship boat ‘De Rotte’ at the Rotterdam Yachtclub regatta in July 1851, attended by no less than King Willem III and Prince Hendrik.
